Let’s talk numbers.
Let’s make your online business more efficient & increase your revenue.
How do you currently generate revenue today? Let’s quickly map this out.
What do you sell? Do you have multiple systems and sources in place? Do you have an e-commerce site?
As an example, let’s say someone sells a product and has:
- an e-commerce website
- sells retail in offices
- has contracted sales reps
Which kind of website would you like?
Select this calculator if you want to have an online store, where you can process sales, payments, or subscriptions directly on your website (using PayPal or other payment methods).
Select this calculator if you plan to sell elsewhere (ie. amazon, etsy, or the apple App or Book Stores) but want to have an official home base for your customers or clients. This would also be a good option if you do contract work, for example, and would like to have a system like PayPal manage your invoices and payments.
Having an effective website is an important aspect in the success of your business, especially nowadays. If you’re new to this, however, please be aware that websites are not a ‘set it and forget it’ system.
Similar to updating your social media content, you will need to be willing to run regular site updates (I will include these instructions for you) for website security and applicable content for your audience, or hire someone to do this for you.
I may not be available to provide a monthly website maintenance subscription for you, but if this is the case, can refer another trusted website freelancer to run updates for you. If you would like to later add or change sections to your website, or run into issues and need help, you can always contact me for further assistance.
Let’s dive
right in.
This page will help explain how design rates work, and what my rates are.
There are many aspects which effect the cost of a design project.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty, however, the most important thing to understand is what you are actually paying for when you purchase or commission designs:
You are mostly paying for the copyright terms to that design.
What you plan to do with it is what determines the rate, more than anything else.

Website Design
Let’s make your online business more efficient & increase your revenue.
How do you currently generate revenue today? Let’s quickly map this out.
What do you sell? Do you have multiple systems and sources in place? Do you have an e-commerce site?
As an example, let’s say someone sells a product and has:
- an e-commerce website
- sells retail in offices
- has contracted sales reps
What percentage of your revenue, year over year, would these represent for you?
For our example, let’s pretend:
- current website generates 45%
- retail sales generate 25%
- sales reps generate 30%
What are the standard profit margins for each one of these? …Here’s where it starts to get interesting.
Looking at this, what area seems to make the most sense for us to focus our efforts, in terms of a marketing/branding initiative? It’s clearly the website. |
So, if we’re able to move the needle on how well your website generates sales, and we do well, let’s fast forward one year… How much of a percentage increase can we build from your current sales? How much can we hope to boost this up?
Generally, a website overhaul can boost sales about 2 – 5%, and possibly as high as 20% depending on further strategic planning and online marketing.
Back to our example, if a company’s revenue from online sales accounts for 45% of their income, this increase could mean:
- A 200k business
- 45% of current revenue from e-commerce sales = 90k
- 5% growth = an additional $4,500
- 10% growth = an additional $9,000
- 45% of current revenue from e-commerce sales = 90k
- A 500k business
- 45% of current revenue from e-commerce sales = 225k
- 5% growth = an additional $11,250
- 10% growth = an additional $22,500
- 45% of current revenue from e-commerce sales = 225k
What we’re looking at here is the value of what an efficient and modernized website can mean for your business. So, how much would a website be worth to you?

Project Rate
This is the rate structure that is used when a project is not open-ended, but when there are definite parameters to its scope. For example, a family portrait, book illustrations, or game illustrations.
Project rates are based on aspects such as:
- scale and complexity of the entire project
- client consultation time
- research and development time
- materials and equipment required
- artistic production time
- number of revisions
- rush fees
- copyright terms
- royalties
To try to make it simpler for everyone, I created the below project calculator, based on information provided by both the Canadian Artists’ Representation Fee Schedule and the Graphic Artists Guild Pricing & Ethical Guidelines. It will provide an estimate of what you can expect to pay for a project of your size.
If you have any questions at all, please feel free to send me a message.

Day Rate
$500 Canadian per day*
This is a great option for:
- occasional but fairly regular work (a monthly retainer option is available to ensure reserved time)
- smaller projects which may take a few days or weeks
- testing out various illustration styles with me prior to starting a project
- when the scope of a project changes and additional days are required
This Day Rate does not include any copyright privilages. If certain copyright terms will be required, they must be purchased in addition to this. To find out how much copyright privileges for your project may cost, please check out the Project Calculator.
Please note, a Day Rate is not available for every project type. Some projects must be calculated through a Project Rate.
If you’re ready to get in touch with me, please send me a message or fill out my project application form.
* This Day Rate (at $62.50/hr) is in line with the Graphic Artists Guild Pricing and Ethical Guidelines, which states the median hourly rate for freelance illustration is $75/hr, and can very well go as high as $250/hr.
